About Me

Hi my name is David Griffiths and I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this profile. I have always excelled academically studying Mathematics to PhD at Kings College London. After Post Doctoral studies abroad, I travelled the world from Venezuela to Zimbabwe. Upon my return I decided to forge a career coding, learning C/C++ and Java in small and early stage software companies. I designed and developed MS Access customer relationship management databases for a council, a waste management company, a waste oil recycler and a waste management broker. I turned to Just IT to build upon my coding experience in the framework of the web, choosing dynamic environment of Open Source.

April 2016 - present

Just IT - Student Through Just IT I am looking to expand my horizons through the languages and frameworks of the web. On my course so far, I have been exposed to javascript, CSS, HTML 5, C# and PYTHON. I am particularly excited learn more PHP and Python, and the diversity of applications that these languages offer. In particular with a view to leverage the analytical skills built up through my academic career in Mathematics

November 2015 - June 2016

Biffa Waste Services Ltd - Accounts Assistant Since Commercial Waste Ltd was acquired by Biffa Waste Services Ltd in November my accounts responsibilities expanded to include: working with treasury services, Barclays Corporate Banking - initiating and submitting payments, and assisting with the compilation of VAT return

October 2013 - October 2015

Commercial Waste Ltd - Access Database Developer / Accounts Assistant Built, developed and managed full functioning of CRM database for £4 million turnover waste management company. The CRM database included a call logging system was developed with archiving solution to maintain performance and visibility. The database also integrated with Sage Line 50 for invoicing. An expert system for allocation of waste contracts by postcode and subcontractor price was also developed, together with workflow systems for sales and customer service staff. Between IT projects I assisted in Accounts with sales invoice query handling, posting and allocation of payments, and credit control. The company was acquired by Biffa Waste Service Ltd in November 2105

May 2013 - October 2013

Proper Oils Ltd - Consultant The goodwill of Footprint Fuels was sold to Proper Oils in April 2013. I assisted with management of roll-out, with CRM integration and with operations

September 2007 - April 2013

Footprint Fuels Ltd - Database Developer/Manager/Investor Co-founded waste cooking oil collector / biodiesel production company. Developed MS Access db CRM system for contract management, scheduling collection rounds. Responsibilities included operations, bookkeeping, VAT returns and biodiesel production. The goodwill of company was sold to Proper Oils in April 2013.

April 2007 - August 2007

Proper Oils Ltd - Database Developer/Investor Designed and built MS Access Database for newly founded waste cooking oil collector. Responsibilities expanded, as required, to sales and operations

December 2006 - April 2007

Travelling Having sold QWS Ltd I again took the opportunity of travelling, this from Mexico to Thailand. This trip including tandem sky-diving in Puerto Escondido, seeing in the New Year in Tokyo, and visiting the World Heritage inspiration for Tomb Raider, Angkor Wat

November 2004 - November 2006

Quality Waste Services Ltd - Database Developer / Manager / Investor Designed and developed MS database for, a small, ambitious trade waste company. The database managed contracts, sales, document fulfilment, customer billing and operations. My responsibilities expanded, as required, to include sales, operations and credit control. The company was sold to PHS Group in September 2006, realizing a 500% return to 2004 investors

April 2003 - November 2004

London Borough of Richmond upon Thames - Technical Officer Designed and built an MS Access db replacing a pair of casually associated Excel spreadsheets. Contract management and Duty of Care document emailing and printing. Waste collection round scheduling and round sheet printing

September 2001 - October 2002

Ipstech - Junior Java Developer / CRM Software Design Development Java CRM software for the J2EE platform with applications specific to the travel industry in a Linux environment. I carried out requirements gathering and put together a design brief

April 2000 - September 2001

Entuity - Junior C/C++ Developer Product testing of award winning network management suite Eye-of-the-Storm with MySQL database. Code development projects using vi and emacs including caching, data handling and C++/HTML CGI for a report section .

January 1999 - December 1999

Travelling I had an amazing time travelling around the world from Venezuela to Zimbabwe, including Angel Falls, the Galapagos Isles, and Machu Picchu, learning to dive in Fiji and to learning to paraglide in South Africa.

October 1996 - September 1998

University of Bordeaux I was Post Doctoral Researcher in Mathematics, Sejour Scientifique de Longue Duree. I had a great time, finally published my thesis "The Side-Pairing Elements Of Maskit’s Fundamental Domain For The Modular Group In Genus Two", enjoyed a lot of wine, learnt even more French and tried my hand at snowboarding.

October 1994 - September 1996

Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne I was a Post Doctoral Researcher in Mathematics, Royal Society Exchange Fellowship. I proved the conjecture in my PhD thesis and published my first major paper "At most 27 length inequalities define Maskit’s fundamental domain for the modular group in genus 2". I also learnt French and learnt how to ski.

October 1990 - September 1994

Kings College London I graduated PhD Mathematics with my thesis Geometry of a fundamental domain for the mapping class group in genus two.

University of Warwick I graduated MSc Mathematics with my dissertation on The Nielsen Realisation problem in hyperbolic geometry

October 1988 - September 1989

Cycle Courier I took a break from academia as a cycle courier around London. I read James Gleick's book Chaos and this inspired me to study non-linear systems at Warwick University

University of Sussex I graduated First Class honours BSc Mathematical Physics
